C. G. Jung: Memories, Dreams, Reflections. Random House, 1963. Jung’s autobiography is essential reading for understanding the evolution of Jung’s thinking about the the image and creative imagination in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Estelle L. Weinrib: Images of the Self: The Sandplay Therapy Process. Temenos, 2004.
A comprehensive overview of sandplay theory and a detailed analysis of a sandplay case illustrating the seven stages of development in sandplay therapy. The book contains a useful list of references and a Glossary of terms. Estelle Weinrib was an American Jungian analyst who trained with Dora Kalff.
Ruth Ammann: Healing and Transformation in Sandplay: Healing Processes Become Visible. Open Court. 1996.
The focus of the book is the process of sandplay therapy and how it works. Ammann deals with the ‘how-to’ details, the necessary role of sand pictures in enhancing the self-regulation of the psyche, the routes from psyche to sand pictures, and the symbolic interpretation of spatial phenomena. This book includes case studies of two adult women and a child. Ruth Ammann is a Jungian analyst in Switzerland, a training analyst and international lecturer who studied with Dora Kalff. She is also a qualified architect.
Robert Hopcke: A Guided Tour of the Collected Works of C.G. Jung. Shambhala, 1999.
An invaluable guide to the foundational concepts in analytical psychology found in the twenty volumes of Jung’s Collected Works. Hopcke includes for each concept suggestions for further readings to begin and to gain a deeper understanding. Robert Hopcke is a Jungian-oriented American marriage and family therapist, supervisor and author.
Phil Goss: Jung: A Complete Introduction. Hachette, 2015.
An introduction to Jungian theory, described as “A lucid and refreshingly innovative introduction to the complex thought of C.G. Jung.” Phil Goss is Senior Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Central Lancashire, and a Jungian Analyst.
Andrew Samuels, Jung and the Post-Jungians. Routledge,1987.
A comprehensive survey of developments in Jungian psychology since Jung’s death in 1961. Samuels presents summaries of important themes in analytical psychology. Andrew Samuels is a British analyst, professor and activist.
Samuels, Shorter & Plaut, A Critical Dictionary of Jungian Analysis. Routledge, 1992.
A guide to concepts in Jung’s analytical psychology compiled by authors with experience as analysts, teachers and writers. It includes terms and ideas introduced and developed by Jung; ordinary words used by Jung in an unusual manner; major terms introduced by other analytical psychologists; and psychoanalytic terms which were adapted or extended by Jung.
Anthony Stevens: Private Myths: Dreams and Dreaming. Penguin Books, 1995.
An exploration of why we have dreams and a guide to their interpretation. Stevens argues that “it is largely by listening to our dreams’ archetypal voices that we can learn to re-assess our ‘private myths’ and restore balance to our lives.” Anthony Stevens is a British Jungian analyst, psychiatrist and writer. He has written several other works of interest to clinicians.
Marie Louise Von Franz: An Introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales. Spring Publications, 1970.
A series of eight lectures and discussion illustrating the method used in analytical psychology to interpret the archetypal patterns of experience in fairytales. Marie-Louise von Franz was one of Jung’s most prolific colleagues. She researched and wrote extensively on the Jungian approach to fairytales and the meaning of alchemical process as a symbol of the individuation process.
Hayao Kawai: The Japanese Psyche: Major Motifs in the Fairy Tales of Japan. Spring, 1996.
An interpretation of major themes in Japanese fairy tales and what they reveal about the soul of the Japanese people. Hayao Kawai was a Japanese Jungian psychologist who has been described as "the founder of Japanese Analytical and Clinical Psychology." Dora Kalff’ introduced sandplay to Kawai and other Japanese analysts who together established sandplay as part of Japanese analytic treatment.
Mircea Eliade: Myth and Reality. Harper and Row, 1963.
An important book and author for understanding the significance of mythological motifs in primitive and contemporary life. Eliade was chairman of the Department of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago. He was also a writer of fiction, a philosopher, and a leading interpreter of religious experience.
Erich Neumann: The Great Mother: An Analysis of the Archetype. Bollingen, 1963; and The Child. Shambhala, 1973.
Comprehensive explorations of the symbolism of the positive and negative aspects of the great mother, and his theory of archetypal child development. Erich Neumann was a student of Jung and Jungian analyst in Israel. Prior to his sudden death, he and Dora Kalff had planned to collaborate in researching how sandplay process reflected his theory of child development and the role of centroversion, which Kalff recognized as the process of the constellation of the Self that precedes ego development.
